Photo Caption: Zion and I have a love-hate relationship. I love the place, it’s absolutely beautiful but it’s always so busy and I can’t stand to be in busy places when I shoot my photos. This photo overlooks some of the campgrounds and is filled with people constantly. I’m glad I was still able to pull an image off there. Doesn’t mean I won’t go back to Zion, just means all dread every time that I do. #FBF #FlashbackFriday

Every single month, at the beginning of a new Milky Way session I tend to be desperate… Those couple weeks or so from night shooting has me fiending all over again.. Mid april was no different so I planned to stop in St George for the night to stay with friends so I could shoot at Zion on my way up to Moab the following day…

At dinner with my buddy Jason Laughlin, we scoped out the angle and time of alignment for the MW with The Watchman from the bridge over the creek. I know, a very common comp but one I didn’t have yet, and one that was super easy to get to when I was out shooting alone that night which is something I don’t typically make a habit of.. We figured out that it wasn’t going to line up till right before it started getting light out, but for some reason I hoped I was wrong so I set an alarm for 130 am, and left for Zion by 2..

I was at the bridge by 230 and pulled out photo pills to find that I was quite correct in my earlier calculations and it wouldn’t align till 430.. I didn’t want to wait around that long so, dejected, I started driving back towards Springdale, hoping for a different composition. As I was exiting the gates of Zion, I saw the MW lined up to The Watchman in a not as common composition over the campgrounds.

I hopped out of my car, shot 2 different comps over about 30 minutes, and happily called it a night!
