The UnWave… I want to…

Photo Caption: The UnWave… I want to preface this post by saying, this Winter Milky Way shot is not taken at The Wave.. Just like not all mudcracks are Racetrack Playa, & not all sand dunes are Mesquite Flats… I will say that the same day that I took this photo, I had attempted to get permits for The Wave & failed, as well as tried the next day, & had tried online a few days ago at the end of November.. So I guess the moral of the story is, if you can’t go to The Wave, well you better find your own!!

Dejected and disappointed, especially after leaving Vegas at 3 am to head out to try and get permits, @JosephRossbach & I had not yet made plans for Monday other than perhaps kicking around the Kanab area in hopes of getting those permits for Tuesday… We pored over the options in the Kanab BLM station and thought about few options in the area before settling on one I had never been to, but Joe had.. So we took a few hour journey out on rough roads by 4×4 (nope, my honda didn’t make this trip) before arriving around 3:00pm… That didn’t leave us much time to explore the area but we wandered around and started shooting before we came across what looked like a mini wave in the distance, just before dusk.

I took the precarious route down, camera and tripod in hand. Joe took the safe route. Later on in the evening we both made the same choices in another exit option and he walked out safe and I walked out with bruises I am still sporting on both elbows.

I grabbed 3 lumecube.com/160.html (Use code TRACYLEE For free US shipping) and lit up this area with a cube and CTO gel on a lighthouse bouncing off a dune to the left, another cube, lighthouse and CTO filter inside the UnWave to the right bouncing off a wall that direction, and then a 3rd out the back bouncing off another wall onto the butte behind.

It was cold, we shot our shots and we got out of there pretty quickly. And trekked for a couple miles back through sand in the dark!
