“As you probably know, UT Rep Chris Stewart has introduced legislation that would make permanent Trump’s repeal of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

This bill is a nightmare! If it passes, all lawsuits challenging Trump’s action will be irrelevant. There will be a hearing on Stewart’s bill on Thursday Dec 14 in Washington DC.

We need to demonstrate that people in Utah oppose it.
And we need to do that right away.

Here’s what you can do:

1. BY WEDNESDAY Dec 13, 2 pm: Write a letter to the Natural Resources Committee saying that you oppose Stewart’s bill (The Grand Staircase Escalante Enhancement Act). You don’t need to be an expert on the bill. And you don’t need to write a long letter. Just make sure you state that you are a Utah/local resident and you oppose the bill (because it would make permanent Trump’s repeal of GSENM and you want GSENM restored by the courts or by Congress). Address your letter to:
Natural Resources Committee
U.S. Congress

Send it as a doc or pdf to Jen@suwa.org by Wednesday at 2 pm. We will make sure that a friendly member of the Committee submits all your letters into the record at the hearing on Thursday.

2. In the next week (or so): Write a letter-to-the-editor expressing your opposition to Stewart’s bill. Again, you don’t need to be an expert. Opinions are what is important here. You can simply say that you opposed Trump’s repeal of GSENM and that you oppose Stewart’s effort to make Trump’s action permanent. Give your personal reason from the heart.

Letters are probably most visible in the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News. Make sure you identify yourself as a rural southern Utah resident – it will help you get published and give your letter credibility.

Submit letters to:
• Deseret News: http://deseretnews.wufoo.com/forms/m7x3z9/
• Salt Lake Tribune: letters@sltrib.com
• Kanab Sun News: http://www.sunews.net/contact.cfm
• Local Escalante paper

Here is a highlight of why Stewart’s bill is a nightmare: • It codifies (turns into law) Trump’s 48% reduction of the 1.9 million-acre reduction of GSENM and nullifies all lawsuits challenging his illegal actions.
